Some stone tools reflect a very early human presence in Castelpagano, presumably already in the Mesolithic. Of particular interest, with regard to the prehistoric period, was, in the early ’900, the discovery of a ‘ax postchelleana, can be placed temporally between the Mesolithic and Neolithic ages. Compared to the population of the Samnites, the ancient inhabitants of the area, it is believed today that their origin must be placed in relation to the people of Sabina, who, migrating, they moved to the territory called Samnium, but it is only the fifth century BC that we can speak properly of the Sunni population as an autonomous force and undisputed ruler of those places. The territory was inhabited by Castelpagano Pentri, one of the main groups of the Samnite people (along with Caudini, the Caraceni and Frentani) recognizing as their capital Bovianum
